The Gulf of Aden continues to be a maritime trading hub in the 21st century.

Despite economic advancement, piracy, illegal fishing, maritime terrorism, and civil war in Somalia and Yemen represent on-going security challenges that threaten stability in the area.

At the end of January 2017, Houti rebels carried out a suicide mission to attack a Saudi Navy frigate west of Hudayah Port in the Red Sea.

Two sailors were killed and three were injured.

The attack is similar to others carried out at the end of 2016, reflecting an on-going terrorist threat in the region.

Furthermore, an increased maritime threat in the Yemeni region was reported in March 2017 when a Yemeni Coast Guard Vessel might have hit a mine in Yemeni territorial waters. This shows how civil war has impacted maritime security. Finally, there have been 3 piracy incidents carried out by Somali pirates this year, indicating the first signs of unrest since a 5-year lull in piracy attacks in the region.

These on-going incidents illustrate the necessity to carry out a full maritime security report of the Gulf of Aden.
